Myopia

At Hendry Opticians, we offer advanced myopia management solutions to help slow the progression of short-sightedness in children and young adults. Our personalised treatment options include Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses, specialist contact lenses, and myopia control spectacle lenses, all tailored to your child's individual needs. By managing myopia early, we can help protect long-term eye health and support clearer vision for the future.

Managing the progression of myopia

Myopia (short-sightedness) is becoming increasingly common in children and young adults, and early support can make a real difference to long-term eye health. At Hendry Opticians, we offer a full range of myopia management options, combining specialist lenses, advanced technology and tailored care to help slow the progression of myopia over time.

As a community-focused practice, we work closely with families across Linlithgow to ensure children receive the very best support for their vision. Our approach links naturally with our children’s eye examinations and contact lens services so your child’s care is consistent, coordinated and reassuring at every stage.

What is myopia?

  • Around age 3–5: First full eye examination.
  • Every two years after that, or more often if advised.
  • Earlier assessment if you notice symptoms such as squinting, headaches, getting close to screens, watery eyes or difficulty concentrating.

Specialist treatment options

We offer proven, evidence-based treatments designed to slow myopia progression while keeping children comfortable and confident in daily life.

Spectacle lenses

We offer advanced spectacle lenses from Zeiss and Essilor, specifically created for myopia management. They correct your child’s vision in the usual way while using sophisticated lens technology to gently slow eye growth.

Essilor Stellest lenses look and feel just like ordinary glasses, making them an easy option for children getting used to wearing glasses.

Contact lenses

MiSight lenses from CooperVision are daily disposable contact lenses designed for myopia control. They are soft, comfortable and ideal for active children who play sport or prefer not to wear glasses at school. As part of our Contact Lens Centre, we provide full fitting, teaching and support for young wearers and their families.

Ortho-K (night lenses)

Ortho-K lenses, sometimes called night lenses, are a highly effective option for managing myopia — and a treatment we’re proud to offer at Hendry Opticians.

These specially designed contact lenses are worn overnight (link to contact lens page) while your child sleeps. They gently reshape the surface of the eye, allowing them to wake up with clear vision all day long, without needing glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Key benefits include:

  • Clear natural vision during the day
  • No lenses or glasses needed at school or for sport
  • A well-researched method for slowing myopia progression
  • Safe, non-invasive and ideal for many children and teenagers

For families exploring treatments beyond standard glasses, Ortho-K offers both freedom and effective long-term eye care.

How we look after your child

A tailored plan

Every child is unique, and so is their vision. We assess their prescription, eye health, lifestyle and age to recommend the most suitable approach.

Linked care across our services

Because myopia management often involves multiple methods, we work seamlessly across:

  • Children’s eye examinations for regular monitoring
  • Contact lenses for MiSight and Ortho-K fittings
  • Eyewear services for Stellest lenses and adjustments

You’ll always know exactly how your child’s vision is progressing and what their next steps will be.

Ongoing monitoring

Myopia control requires consistent follow-up. We review your child’s vision regularly to make sure the treatment is working well, and we adjust their plan whenever needed.
