Children’s eye examinations

At Hendry Opticians, we understand how important your child’s vision is to their learning, confidence and everyday life. Our children’s eye examinations are designed to be relaxed, reassuring and thorough, giving parents complete confidence that their child’s eyes are well cared for.

Gentle, thorough care for young eyes

Our friendly and experienced optometrists take their time with every child, creating a calm and supportive environment. Children often have different visual needs to adults, so we tailor each examination to their age, attention span and developmental stage.

We check eye health, vision, focusing ability and binocular vision to make sure your child can see clearly and comfortably in school, at home and during hobbies.

When should children have their eyes checked?

Children do not always realise they have a problem with their vision, so routine examinations are essential.
  • Around age 3–5: First full eye examination.
  • Every two years after that, or more often if advised.
  • Earlier assessment if you notice symptoms such as squinting, headaches, getting close to screens, watery eyes or difficulty concentrating.
Eye examinations for children are fully covered by the NHS in Scotland.
